POSITION TITLE: Director of Community Engagement

REPORTS TO: President & Chief Executive Officer

STATUS: Full-Time / Exempt Level

 

PRIMARY FUNCTION: Oversee the day-to-day management of the Community Engagement Department.  At the direction of the President & CEO, develop, implement and execute public outreach and fund development strategies; Create accountability plans for the team, monitor progress, and quickly refine/adjust to optimize results and increase revenues.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

Executive Support

  • Meet with the President & CEO on a regular basis and make recommendations to develop strategy around cultivating and stewarding relationships to build BGCWR's visibility, impact, and financial resources, including an in-kind donations program.
  • In conjunction with the President & CEO and Board, lead the organization’s process to actively engage all sectors of the community; Identify collaborative community organizations and opportunities to create efficiencies, cost-savings strategies and/or new directions.

Senior Management, Leadership and Supervisory

  • Serves as part of the senior management team, working to ensure organizational health and effectiveness; Helps leadership identify and address organizational engagement issues that challenge and support health and effectiveness in general, and fund development specifically.
  • In collaboration with the CEO and board, develop and implement a strategic plan for single and multi-year community engagement and resource development efforts.
  • Staff and manage the Community Engagement Committee of the Board of Directors.
  • Works closely with Director of Operations and Director of Finance & HR to ensure all grant/funding requirements are met for reporting and outcomes measurement. Compiles and supplies details and reports to meet all required reporting deadlines.
  • Supervises the Special Events & Marketing Coordinator who oversees planning of logistics for signature special events, solicitation of auction items and gifts, third party events, social media plan, and marketing collateral.
  • Ensure appropriate and expedient systems are in place with respect to the constituent relations management system (Little Green Light), and gifts processing and acknowledgement.
  • Participates in the development, implementation and monitoring of the Club’s annual budget, controlling expenditures within budget and maintaining donor and financial records in accordance with compliance regulations and organization standards.

Community Engagement

  • Manage and build annual fund revenue through solicitation and stewardship by moving $100 donors to the $1,000 level over time plus, maintain a portfolio of donors (individual, foundation, corporate and community partners) from $1,000 to $3,000 levels.
  • Develops strategic alliances with community leaders, local officials and BGC local, regional and national staff. Develops collaborative partnerships with other youth serving organizations, members, parents, families, funders and community organizations.
  • Serves as an organizational ambassador, nurturing community relationships and identifying avenues for funding.
  • Sustains excellent public relations with local media contacts, members, families, alumni, community leaders and youth serving professionals.
  • Maintains active membership and participation in professional fundraising associations in order to remain current in trends and opportunities in the fundraising and philanthropic sectors.
  • Leads the staff of the marketing function to develop and coordinate implementation of all marketing and public relations activities to increase the visibility of Club programs, services and activities.
  • Ensures that the website and all social media sites are updated regularly with relevant and effective information and supervises the accuracy of all information.

Fund Development

  • In partnership with the CEO, maintain a portfolio of donors and prospects, and engage in donor cultivation and gift solicitation, including in-kind gifts.
  • In consultation with the CEO, prepares all grant proposals and reports for the organization.
  • Manage fund development for BGCWR, meeting annual operating budget targets; Lead role in the coordination/dissemination of annual fund and direct mail campaigns, newsletters, donor acquisition, solicitation, stewardship and retention, foundation relations, and successful engagement to achieve future major and planned gifts.
  • Oversee special events, managing and strategizing with the Special Events & Marketing Coordinator to grow revenue from special events, and leverage them for donor cultivation and other constituent engagement. Manage relationships with Event Chairs, Host Committees, and Board Member fundraising relative to events.
  • Evaluate the effect of internal and external forces on the organization and its fund development; recommends short and long term fund development plans and programs that support the organization’s mission and general objectives.
  • Assures development of a balanced funding mix of donor sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of the organization that will enable it to attract, retain and motivate donors and fundraising volunteers.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Adhere to the highest ethical standards in management, governance, donor relations, and fund development. Convey a professional and positive image and attitude regarding the organization and the nonprofit sector.
  • Demonstrate commitment to and aggressively pursue continued professional growth and development.
  • Ensures design and development of public relations materials for use in the promotion of fundraising, and education of the public, including press releases.  Ensures the development and distribution of marketing collateral.
  • Assists in all areas of the Club as directed.  Provides tours for guests, donors, community leaders, interns, and volunteers as needed.
  • Must work harmoniously with all internal staff and volunteers.
  • Required to attend and assist with BGCWR special events and fundraisers as directed.

 

  • Responds in a timely manner to all external and internal written and electronic communications from staff, volunteers, donors, board members and Club associates.

 

  • Some evening and weekend hours required.

 

  • All other duties as assigned.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Internal:  Maintain oral and written contact with the chief executive, staff, peers, and volunteers for the purpose of exchange of information, to provide progress reports regarding activities and planned programs, and to coordinate events.  

External:  Maintain oral and written contact with donors, fundraising volunteers, funding sources, board members, other agencies, business leaders, community groups, boards of directors of such organizations, and the media for the purpose of exchanging information and ideas and for the purpose of fundraising.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required and 2 years community engagement experience in a professional position.
  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and techniques with in the community engagement sphere and sources of diversified funding for non-profit agencies and organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing a comprehensive community engagement program and producing sustainable relationships and charitable contributions.
  • Knowledge and experience in the following areas is highly preferred:  Motivations for giving and volunteering; research and cultivation practices; standard fundraising techniques including face-to-face solicitation, proposal writing, special events, telephone solicitation, and direct mail; and development office functions including gift processing, prospect and donor histories, and fundraising reporting. The individual is also expected to have demonstrated experience and confidence in asking people to contribute time and money. 
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, computer and donor tracking systems.
  • Current knowledge and experience working with social media and multiple forms of media, including branding.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Club staff, Board members, volunteers, community groups, and other related agencies.
